Activision pulls plug on Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, and True Crime: Hong Kong

Guitar Hero

Activision Blizzard has announced that they will be ending the Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, and True Crime: Hong Kong franchises this year.

“Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011,” the company said in its fourth quarter earnings report.

“These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world’s best interactive entertainment experiences,” Activision said.

The end of these gaming franchises doesn’t mean the end of sales, however.  Activision Blizzard still plans on selling Guitar Hero and DJ Hero games, as well as selling and supporting recently released DLC track and mix packs.

Along with the news for these gaming franchises, Activision Blizzard plans to lay off about 7% of their workforce or 500 employees.
