The Story So Far – Splinter Cell (Part 1)

With video game series spanning several games and years in-between production, the stories of some games fall through the cracks. When said game series come out with their new installments, everyone seems to be in love with what the game looks like and has to offer. But a lot of times, these games have story lines that span several games. Without playing these games and understanding the story, some gamers get lost and don’t understand the full nature. One of those games coming out, is Splinter Cell: Conviction.

Conviction is the fifth game in the Splinter Cell series and is based off of both the events in Splinter Cell: Double Agent and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. And like the games before them, they all tie back to the original Splinter Cell title. While visiting my local game store, some of the customers were talking about how “awesome” the latest Splinter Cell game looked and they can’t wait. I asked if they know about the series, their answer was no. After telling them about how Splinter Cell is more of a stealth based title, the joy of being unable to wait for the game to come out suddenly dropped as they thought it was more of a game like Call of Duty. Though some of them still would like to have tried it, but not understanding the story.

With Splinter Cell: Conviction releasing on Tuesday, we’re going to go back and take a look at each individual title that has been released.

sc1Splinter Cell (GCN, PC, PS2, Xbox)

In 2004, the National Security Agency (NSA) in Fort Meade, Maryland set up their own splinter group designed to be more of a single-person covert operations. This splinter agency is known as Third Echelon and is headed by Colonel Irving Lambert. He assembles the best hackers and field support agents to help these “Splinter Cell’s” on assignment. The first man they chose to head the project is none other than Samuel Fisher. Anna Grimsdóttir is also introduced as Fishers computer expert and hacker. His personal friend Vernon Wilkes, Jr. is also his personal support and handler, although he is shot and killed during the game.

Fisher is original sent in to Georgia to find two missing CIA operatives. Apon his investigation, he finds evidence about how the Georgian President Kombayn Nikoladze is ordering mass murders against their neighboring country of Azerbaijan. When NATO is sent in to complete Fisher’s investigation, the Nikoladze retaliates with the help of a Canadian hacker, Phillip Masse. The two hack into dozens of computers in the U.S.  and create what was called an information crisis.

Fisher is sent out once again to stop Nikoladze. Along the way, he learns about a “nuclear suitcase bomb” that has been placed in America. After he assassinates Nikoladze, he gains the information needed to stop the nuclear device and end the information crisis. After completing that, he also hunts down Phillip Masse and assassinates him as well.

sc2ptSplinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (GCN, PC, PS2, Xbox)

In 2006, in the newly formed country of East Timor located in Southeast Asia, the U.S. forms a military presence to train the country’s military how to fight against the Indonesian forces. The main Indonesian force is Darah Dan Doa led by Suhadi Sadono. Sadono was once trained by the CIA but now he disapproves of the U.S.’s actions with East Timor. He launches a bombing of the U.S. embassy and  follows up by taking it over, hostages and all. One of the hostages is a U.S. Military member Douglass Shetland, another friend of Fisher.

Fisher is sent in to gather intelligence of the Darah Dan Doa while U.S. Armed Forces retake the embassy. While gathering his information, Fisher finds out that Sadono has a master plan called “Pandora Tomorrow” in which he will release several biological bombs filled with smallpox. Sadono also has a setup where he can call these locations to slowly release the smallpox at any cost. If he’s killed, the bombs will release the smallpox all at the same time, killing millions.

Fisher is then sent in with Shetland and his PMC, Displace International, to infiltrate the Darah Dan Doa and locate these bombs. After finding their location, Shadownet spies are sent in and disarm all of the bombs. After all is said and done, Fisher is sent to apprehend Sadono instead of assassinate him like they did with Georgian President Nikoladze from the previous game.

Unfortunately all is not well. Third Echelon discovers that a rouge CIA agent, Norman Soth, has acquired one of the smallpox bombs that was unaccounted for. Soth plans on detonating the bomb in LAX not for Indonesia, but a retaliation against the U.S. for what he believed to be a betrayal against him. Fisher is sent in and eliminates Soth and his mercenary group, disguises himself as a maintenance worker, places the bomb near two police officers, and disappears. The police officers notice the bomb, evacuate the building, and perform a controlled explosion.

Next time we’ll review the third game, and what fans agree to be the best of the Splinter Cell series thus far, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.
