Review – Space Pirates and Zombies (S.P.A.Z.)
What’s Not: Leveling up, unlocking technologies, and expanding your fleet are huge parts of the S.P.A.Z. gameplay. And while all of this makes for a lot of fun, it also leads to a lot of grinding. Sometimes it will take a crushing defeat to realize that your fleet isn’t quite ready and it’ll take a handful (or more) of side missions to get the technology boosts you’ll need to progress the story.
And speaking of side missions, you’ll start to notice the same missions only after a few hours of gameplay. Escort a ship, obliterate the opposition, and destroy X amount of trash/barrels will all start to become very familiar in a very short time.
Final Verdict: S.P.A.Z. offers a great mix of top-down space combat, RPG elements, and beautiful 2D visuals. Old school gamers will appreciate the the throwback feeling, and gamers new to this style/genre will discover a new addiction and appreciation. While S.P.A.Z. does require some grinding and can feel repetitive at times, the overall fun and quality that this game has to offer makes it a solid winner. This is one of those games that I can recommend without hesitation and plan on pouring many more hours into because it’s just that much fun.
