The Scoop:The arcade classic Ms. Pacman is now available for the iPad, complete with all 256 original levels, and three different ways to control the action.

The Setup:Well… umm…… It’s Ms. Pacman. I’ve been playing this game since I was about 3 years old (for the Atari 2600 so it wasn’t a very good start).

What do you say about a game that hasn’t changed since before I was born?

What’s Hot: This is a pretty much perfect arcade port of the original Ms. Pacman, except you can actually make it to the 256th level without it crashing. I mean this isn’t exactly a new concept, I’ve been playing arcade perfect ports of these titles for years, but on a plus side for this one the screen is pretty much shaped like the screen on the original Pacman machines so you pretty much get the perfect aspect ratio.

It lets you choose how you wish to control the action. You can either use a virtual joystick (my preferred way), swipe your finger on the screen to control Ms. Pacman, or tilt around the screen and let the accelerometer control the action (not recommended at all). The joystick takes some getting used to, but works considerably better than other games I have played on iOS. If you want to really improve the action you can buy one of those suction cup joysticks, this is pretty much the reason those things exist. I totally need to get one.

What’s Not: While it’s better than Pacman, it’s no Pacman: Championship Edition. You may want to hold out for the iPad release of that version or just grab the Live Arcade version on the Xbox 360.

Final Verdict: Paying a couple of dollars for a classic like Ms. Pacman is never a bad thing, the controls are a bit tough to get a handle on but it’s still well worth picking up.
