Monthly DLC: Level Hell – Boom Town, LittleBigPlanet

Monthly DLC is a new addition to Level Up News. Each month the staff members of Level Up News will present their take on the game-related topic of the month. This month is “Level Hell”, in which the staff members each choose a video game level they despise for reasons ranging from extreme difficulty to awful repetitiveness, boring dullness to sheer stupidity. Leading off the editorials is our editor-in-chief Abe Arceo with his pick:

LBP-Boom Town 2LittleBigPlanet is an amazing game, no question about it.  From your cute little Sackboy and his awesomely unique outfits, to the the robust level creation and wonderfully addicting soundtrack, this game just rocks. But with all this charming and addicting game play, it’s easy to forget how difficult and challenging some of the levels can be.    Well in case you did forget some of those painful levels, I didn’t.  Especially one level in particular – Boom Town.

Boom Town is the first level in The Canyons area of LittleBigPlanet, and is where you first encounter good’ol Uncle Jalepeño.  While we’re not entirely sure what criminal act Uncle Jalepeño committed, whatever he did (or didn’t do) was enough reason for the Evil Sheriff to throw Uncle Jalepeño spiky-haired self in jail. Why is this important? Because once you free him, Uncle Jalepeño teaches you how to use the boom-tastic impact explosives!

Shortly after you free Uncle Jalepeño and learn about impact explosives, you’ll come across one of the most frustrating segment in the entire Boom Town level.  Yep, you guessed it – it’s the jetpack and bomb combo section.  Thought the level was pretty much smooth sailing so far, eh?  Now let the fun begin!

Once players reach this section of Boom Town, your Sackboy gets equipped with a jetpack, and must carry impact explosives through a maze of cliffs.  Accidentally bump into a cliff a little too hard? BOOM! – you die.  Made it through the maze of cliffs just fine?  Perfect! Except that you need at least two bombs to blast through to the other side.  And not only that, but you need to make sure those impact explosives detonate.

LBP-Boom TownOh and the fun doesn’t stop there.  If you haven’t fried yourself with explosives and made it to the other side, you’re next obstacle is to carry more explosives via jetpack through a series of spikes that have no shame in turning you into a shish kabob.  Not only do you have to dodge the spikes in hopes of not getting impaled, but you also have to make sure that the spikes don’t hit and detonate your impact explosives. Once you make it to the end of the spikes, you need to toss your impact explosives at the right angle and hope that you’ve put enough oomph into your toss so the explosives actually detonate. And just like the previous maze of cliffs, this section requires at least two impact explosives.  So now you have to make your way back through the poky spikes, pick up another impact explosive, and do it all over again.

I swear that Boom Town took me at least 8 or 9 replays during my run of the game.  The segment requires a good amount of patience and a steady hand, which is really hard to control after you blow yourself up 2 or 3 times.  No matter how many times I play through LittleBigPlanet, I can never finish Boom Town on the first try thanks to the every-so-friendly jetpack and bomb combo segment.  You would think by now I would have learned to take my time to navigate steadily, carefully, and slowly through the maze and spikes.  Nope.  And no matter how many more times I play through Boom Town, I’m pretty sure I’ll blow myself up at least a handful of times. Talk about a frustrating.  At least the music is catchy!
