3DS to monitor flash cart use

Although the launch on Nintendo’s newest handheld, the Nintendo 3DS, is only two weeks away, news just keeps spewing out for this beauty. Today, Japanese retailer Enterking posted a warning on their website stating that the retailer will refuse to purchase any 3DS system with “a record of any illegal or unapproved equipment.” The statement came after the retailer received a letter from Nintendo that stated, “In case if you use equipment which is illegal or unapproved by Nintendo or if you do customization which is unapproved by Nintendo, there is a possibility that Nintendo 3DS become non bootable by system update.”

Eurogamer contacted Nintendo about the letter to which Nintendo replied, “We do not discuss product security details (for obvious reasons), nor can we discuss the details of countermeasures available in the Nintendo 3DS system. Nintendo 3DS has the most up-to-date technology. The security has been designed to protect both the creative works in the software and to protect the Nintendo 3DS hardware system itself.”

So far there has been no word from any other retailers, Japan or US, as to any sellback denial clause. It has been reported that the Nintendo 3DS will have a game tracker program much like on the Wii which will tell you what game or application you have used and for how long you have used it. The rumor currently is that said application may be a key to telling what applications have been used, but not the only way that Nintendo can track.

Although R4 cards have been more of a problem in Japan then the US, mostly before said cards were banned, there’s no word on whether some cards such as Action Replay, which are already unauthorized by Nintendo, will be classified under “unapproved equipment” for the Nintendo 3DS.
